American tulipwood ( Liriodendron tulipifera) derives its name from its unique tulip-shaped blossoms and leaves. It is one of the largest and most plentiful hardwoods of the eastern forests of the United States. Mature trees are among the tallest in the forest with long straight trunks topped by a branching crown.
The wood of this tree is creamy white often streaked with accents of green and brown. It has long straight grain and is lighter than most hardwoods. Yet it is very strong for its weight and resists bending and warping. It is easily machined and is commonly used for cabinetry and architectural moldings. Its characteristics make it an ideal choice for stretcher bars.
